TANAH MERAH - A man whose car's road tax had expired and who did not have a valid driver’s license accelerated his vehicle for two kilometres in a bid to evade the police, yesterday.

However, the self-employed man in his 30s was caught in Kampung Kusial Bharu here.

Tanah Merah district police chief Superintendent Mohd Haki Hasbullah said at 3pm, during an Op Selamat operation at the Taman Kota Harmoni roundabout, police found a BMW car making an illegal u-trun.

“During an attempt to make an arrest on the suspect, he drove off recklessly, endangering other road users.

"The man was eventually apprehended in Kampung Kusial and upon further inspection inside the car, a box containing various types of firecrackers was found," he said in a statement, today.

Haki said the suspect was then arrested and taken to the Tanah Merah District Police Headquarters (IPD) for further action.

He added that investigations revealed the suspect fled because he did not have a driver's license and his car’s road tax had expired on Oct 8, 2021.

Haki said the suspect also admitted to possessing firecrackers for personal use.
