KUALA LUMPUR - "Tudung visor” or visor-style hijab is in fashion. The name sounds funny, but it is trending and has become one of the most popular styles of wearing the hijab among fashion lovers, especially young people.

Although the style of using a "bawal” or square scarf or shawl with the head part folded into a double-layered awning is not new, its "comeback” has attracted a lot of attention with more and more people spotting the style for their hijab.

"At the beginning of last January, I often received requests (from celebrities) for this style of hijab during photoshoots. Initially, I could not imagine what this ‘tudung visor’ is until I was shown a picture of it,” said hijab stylist Eka Jamaludin.

She said the style has been around for a long time, but surfaced again and became popular as many influencers and celebrities are now using the style for their hijab.

With more than eight years of experience in hijab styling, the Fashion Design Diploma holder also expects the style to be the in thing among hijab wearers during this upcoming Aidilfitri celebration, especially among young people.

"With the right fabric, it is easy to style a scarf or shawl into a visor hijab,” said Eka, adding that it pleased her to know that hijab wearers are getting more creative in styling their headscarves and shawls.

She also said the visor style of wearing the hijab is suitable for all face shapes.

Entrepreneur and influencer Adira Salahudi, 27, is said to be the trendsetter of the visor-style hijab.

"I don't think I started the style, but maybe because I always wear it, so many think that I am the one who started it. I started styling my hijab the visor style after watching tutorial videos that are often shared on social media.

"The visor style is easy to make and it also looks more attractive compared to the one layer which looks plain and simple,” said the influencer who has 1.2 million followers on Instagram.

Adira, who produces her own brand of headscarves, said the visor-style hijab also looks neater, attractive and more comfortable to wear.

The youngest of four siblings, Adira said she began styling her hijab with the visor in April last year and has received many requests from her followers to make a tutorial and share how to wear a headscarf with the visor style.

Another influencer, Noor Farhani Mohamad Faizal, 23, better known as Cikgu Farey on TikTok, said she fell in love with the visor-style hijab because it suits her face.

"It highlights the structure of my cheekbones and makes the shape of my face more attractive. Actually, the method of folding the scarf started in the time of our great-grandmothers, it's just that people used to think that style was not beautiful and looked old when wearing it, but since there are beautiful influencers who enjoy wearing the same style, people started to follow because they feel beautiful too," she said.

Noor Farhani, who is from Kedah and has nearly 600,000 followers on TikTok, said self-confidence and overall appearance also play an important role in making the style look attractive. - BERNAMA
