SHAH ALAM - Jaya Grocer founder Teng Yew Huat has died at the age of 68.

The leading mass-premium supermarket brand’s chief executive officer Adelene Food confirmed this in a statement today.

“It is with a heavy heart that we share the sad news of the passing of our beloved Mr Teng Yew Huat.

“As founder of Jaya Grocer, he was the heart and driving force behind the success and growth of our company.

“His passing is definitely a profound loss to the team at Jaya Grocer and to the industry,” she said, adding that the memorial was being planned at the moment.

Teng’s family founded Jaya Grocer in 2007 with the first store opening in Jaya 33 in Petaling Jaya, Selangor. The company was then sold to Grab Holdings Ltd (Grab) in 2021.

According to Jaya Grocer’s website, the company currently operates 35 outlets nationwide.

The Teng family also founded the famous Teng Minimarket Centre (TCM) in Lucky Garden Bangsar as well as the Giant grocery store. Both of these chains were subsequently sold to Hong Kong’s Dairy Farm International Holdings Ltd.
