Malaysia prepares for climate impacts at Red Crescent Forum

SHAH ALAM - The Malaysian Red Crescent (MRC) convened the Climate Change Forum 2024: Shaping Resilience in Malaysia at the MRC National Headquarters today, with support from the International Federation of Red Cross and Red Crescent Societies (IFRC).

The forum offered a comprehensive examination of Malaysia's climate dynamics, drawing on research conducted between 2022 and 2023.

The panel for the forum comprised representatives from MRC, IFRC, and key government agencies such as the National Disaster Management Agency (Nadma), Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia), and the Health Ministry.

Participants included embassies, environmental agencies, research institutions, universities, donors, and supporters, particularly those focused on climate change.

Given Malaysia's diverse ecosystems, the nation is highly susceptible to climate change impacts.

The Climate Change Forum 2024 served as a vital platform for stakeholders to delve into recent research findings, discuss vulnerabilities, and develop resilience measures, recognising the urgent need for coordinated action.

Through panel discussions, keynote addresses, and interactive workshops, participants gained insights into Malaysia's unique risks and vulnerabilities, exploring innovative solutions for sustainable development and climate resilience.

Key outcomes included:

• Disseminating the latest research findings on climate change in Malaysia.
• Enhancing understanding of specific vulnerabilities and risks.
• Identifying collaborative strategies among agencies to address climate challenges.

Recommendations were formulated for policymakers to integrate climate change considerations into future policies and planning.

The forum facilitated connections among key stakeholders, paving the way for future collaborations and knowledge exchange.

It also contributed to raising public awareness and understanding of climate change issues in Malaysia, empowering communities through information sharing and engagement.

As mandated by Parliament Act 540, MRC serves as an auxiliary to the government, actively advancing community resilience and sustainable development initiatives to address climate change challenges.

MRC collaborated with government agencies and stakeholders, including through the Climate Change Technical Working Group, to lead research, advocacy efforts, and implement climate-resilient programs.

The aim is to support vulnerable communities in Malaysia and beyond.
