Pas supports efforts to amend constitution - Tuan Ibrahim
He said the constitutional amendments could not be implemented when Pas was part of the previous government.
PUTRAJAYA - Pas is ready to give full commitment to all efforts in strengthening the country's sharia law.
Its deputy president Datuk Seri Tuan Ibrahim Tuan Man said it includes if the government brings a motion to amend the constitution in Parliament.
"They (the government) have the support of two-thirds, so they can make amendments and Pas will give our commitment," he told Sinar on Monday.
He said this while commenting on the invitation of Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi regarding the discussion between Muslim members of Parliament regarding the matter being feasible but should not be used as political material.
The matter follows the decision of the Federal Court which cancelled 16 provisions of offences under the Kelantan Syariah Criminal Code Enactment (1) 2019 and Zahid did not want it to be politicised.
Zahid said this was because the decision made by the Federal Court was related to the legislative provisions approved by the Kelantan State Assembly and not regarding the Syariah Court.
Tuan Ibrahim said the constitutional amendments could not be implemented when Pas was part of the previous government.
"In the past, we did not have a majority because Pas only had 18 members of Parliament and the government at that time was a minority. So, any constitutional amendment cannot be implemented at that time," he explained.
He added that Pas would also hold a party-level discussion regarding the implications of the Federal Court's decision.
"It does not only involve Pas-dominated states, but throughout the country," he said.
When asked whether Pas or its members of Parliament had received an invitation or notification regarding the discussion, Tuan Ibrahim said so far, they have not received any invitation.
