Melaka's Jonker walk blazes with festive spirit for Chinese New Year

SHAH ALAM - The historic Jonker Walk in Melaka is awash in festive fervour, gearing up for vibrant Chinese New Year celebrations.

The renowned street, known for its rich cultural heritage and lively atmosphere, has undergone a dazzling transformation.

Over 1,000 bright red lanterns adorn the entire stretch, creating a breathtaking spectacle for visitors.

At the entrance of Jonker Walk stands an awe-inspiring 268-foot long dragon replica, serving as a majestic symbol of prosperity and good fortune for the upcoming Chinese New Year.

The vibrant red and gold hues, symbolising luck and wealth, dominate the scene, creating an immersive experience for all who wander through the decorated street.

Premlegan Kaliappan, 25, from Perak, shared that visiting Jonker Walk for Chinese New Year is his family tradition every year.

"The decorations here never fail to amaze us.

"Jonker was kind of silent in the pandemic era, but now it gives a comeback with stunning decorations," he said.

Meanwhile, Sharon Ann, 33, expressed her excitement, saying, "It's incredible to see the entire street lit up with these beautiful red lanterns.

"The dragon at the entrance is simply mesmerising.

"It truly feels like a magical celebration."

Suhailah Sharudin from Kuala Lumpur stressed that it's a must to visit Jonker Walk during the festive season since the street has so much to offer for customers.

"Jonker will never disappoint me; the decorations this year definitely give everyone a beautiful Instagrammable photo spot.

"It's great to see how the management has worked hard in making the festive season merrier," she said.

Recently, local media reported that the vibrant atmosphere for the Chinese New Year celebration aims to attract visitors in line with Visit Melaka Year 2024 (TMM 2024).

Jonker Walk committee chairman Datuk Gan Tian Loo mentioned that the decorations involved a cost of nearly RM2 million, contributed by various sponsors to this location, which will host the state-level Chinese New Year celebration on Feb 22.

"We aim to welcome one million domestic and international visitors to Jonker Walk during the 15-day period from Feb 10 in conjunction with the Chinese New Year until the Chap Goh Meh celebration on Feb 24.

"Various cultural and arts performances have been lined up to enhance the visitor experience," he said.
