Poll: Ninety per cent favour reinstatement of UPSR and PT3 exams
SHAH ALAM - An Instagram poll by Sinar Harian entitled 'Should Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) and Pentaksiran Tingkatan Tiga (PT3) exams be reinstated?' saw 90 per cent of readers choosing the answer 'yes'.
Only 10 per cent of readers chose 'no' for reinstating the UPSR and PT3 exams.
The poll, posted on Jan 22, garnered the participation of 4,506 respondents regarding the implementation of these school exams.
Meanwhile, the Sinar Harian’s X platform also reflected similar results, with 80.9 per cent of 513 readers selecting the 'yes' option.
In the comments section, X user @mariam.sarwani said major exams like UPSR and PT3 played a crucial role for children, especially in determining the appropriate class stream for them.
"As a parent, I worry that without major exams, children may lose focus and parents might also be distracted.
"Another difficulty is determining which class stream our child is suitable for. It's better to reinstate (UPSR and PT3)," she wrote.
Another reader @suehaina82 suggested that ordinary exam results should also include grades and exam numbers as before.
This, she said was for parents to take note of their children's learning level in school.
"When there are no serious exams, students lack motivation at the end of the year due to the absence of competition," she commented.
Social media user @flowerlydina who is a teacher said that exams were important to instil motivation among children to attend school and learn.
Without serious exams, she said kids will play around in their learning process.
"They might not want to study, lack focus and skip classes," she wrote.
Reader @mutiara_pearls2 emphasised that important exams like UPSR and PT3 can also serve as a direction for students to set goals in their learning process.
"It is necessary. Otherwise, students nowadays seem to lack direction. They only know how to play," she added.
Meanwhile, reader @zurazurainiz suggested that only PT3 should be reinstated saying that UPSR was unnecessary.
