Dr Mahathir questions MACC's approach
SHAH ALAM - Former prime minister Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad has publicly questioned the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) Chief Commissioner Tan Sri Azam Baki over the handling of corruption allegations against him.
During a press conference, Dr Mahathir expressed his willingness to cooperate with any investigation but criticised MACC's approach.
He questioned why the alleged accusations, stemming from information in the Panama and Pandora Papers, were relayed to his son, Mirzan Mahathir, instead of directly to him.
"I want to ask Azam Baki, who is making the accusations?
"Why didn't he tell me? Why did he tell my son that there is an accusation, and he has to declare his assets?
"If there is an accusation, tell me," he told a press conference at Yayasan Kepimpinan Perdana in Putrajaya.
Last week, the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) served a notice to Dr Mahathir's son, Mirzan Mahathir, a businessman, requiring him to declare his assets within 30 days based on information from the Panama Papers and the Pandora Papers.
Dr Mahathir claimed that his son faced threats of imprisonment for five years and questioned the accountability of individuals implicated in the Pandora Papers.
He also demanded concrete evidence for the accusations against him, stressing the absence of proof allegely presented by the current prime minister.
Dr Mahathir has initiated a defamation lawsuit against Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, urging for the presentation of evidence in a court of law.
