Defence Minister lauds Corporal Mazlan's courageous rescue at Penang Bridge
GEORGE TOWN - The bravery of a member of the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM), Corporal Mazlan Abdul Rahman from the Second Battalion of the Royal Malay Regiment (2 RAMD), who jumped off the Penang Bridge, has caught the attention of the Defence Minister Datuk Seri Mohamed Khaled Nordin.
Khaled, in his post on the X platform, said that Corporal Mazlan's courage could serve as an example and inspiration to all, especially the members of the Malaysian Armed Forces (ATM).
"Congratulations and thank you Corporal Mazlan Abdul Rahman for your brave and swift action in saving the life of a civilian believed to have fallen into the sea from the Penang Bridge.
"This bravery can be an example and a lesson for all, particularly for the members of the Malaysian Armed Forces," he said.
It was reported that the Malaysian Army (TDM) also described the quick response of their member in saving two victims who fell from the Penang Bridge here on Monday as exemplary for all TDM personnel.
The drama unfolded at 7.49pm as the couple, reportedly arguing in their Honda Civic, plunged from the bridge.
Miraculously, Corporal Mazlan witnessed the fall and heroically rescued both by jumping into the water and pulling them onto a nearby fishing boat.
State police chief Datuk Khaw Kok Chin said based on an initial statement from the 40-year-old woman, she was pushed off the bridge by her boyfriend, 37, who is a senior police officer from outside the state.
He said police had opened an investigation paper into the incident under Section 307 of the Penal Code for attempted murder.
