South Africa's case at ICJ underscores its commitment to justice - IAIS Malaysia
KUALA LUMPUR - South Africa's commendable move to bring Israel before the International Court of Justice (ICJ) for its war on Gaza underscores the country's commitment to justice and accountability, said the International Institute of Advanced Islamic Studies (IAIS) Malaysia.
In a statement Tuesday, IAIS noted that it recognises South Africa's historical commitment to fighting against apartheid regimes, drawing parallels with the struggle against injustices in the Gaza Strip and Palestine as a whole.
"This collective endeavour reflects the international community's shared responsibility in addressing human rights violations and fostering lasting peace in the region," it said.
IAIS Malaysia, in its steadfast support of this initiative, also commended Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim's leadership for his resolute support for the Palestinian cause and solidarity with South Africa's pursuit of a just and peaceful resolution to the Palestinian-Israeli conflict.
"We hope other countries will follow South Africa’s example in seeking an end to the barbaric attack on Gaza," it added.
The institute stands ready to collaborate with the Malaysian government in providing any necessary assistance to uphold the principles of justice and human rights, emphasising the importance of a fair and impartial legal process at the ICJ.
South Africa, which filed the case in December, accused Israeli authorities of perpetrating genocide against Palestinians in Gaza. It requested provisional measures from the court to protect Palestinians, including by calling upon Israel to immediately halt military attacks.
South Africa laid out a list of alleged genocidal acts by Israel on the first day of the hearing Thursday, while Israel defended itself Friday.
Israel has killed more than 24,000 Palestinians in Gaza since Oct 7. The military campaign has also caused mass displacement, destruction and hunger. - BERNAMA
