SHAH ALAM - Political leaders in this country need to be aware to not give opinions or suggestions that are seen as interfering with the religious affairs of others as it is feared that it will lead to negative implications.

Sultan Zainal Abidin University (UniSZA) Centre for International Relations Studies head Dr Hussain Yusri Zawawi said that he did not rule out the possibility that the incident involving Beruas MP Datuk Ngeh Koo Ham, may stem from his suggestions that touched on the issues involving the 3Rs (race, religion, royal institution).

"In a society with diverse cultures and beliefs, it is important to understand and respect religious freedom and the right of every individual to practice their religious beliefs without interference.

"Interfering with the religious affairs of others can lead to misunderstanding and conflict within the community, it can cause unrest and may lead to other undesirable things.

"Therefore, when issues involving religion, race, and royalty arise, we need to be mindful in giving opinions," he told Sinar on Wednesday.

Hussain added that differences in religious beliefs often formed the basis of a person's identity and values.

He said if interfered with, it can create discomfort, insecurity and may threaten unity within society.

"It is important to remember that every individual has the right to determine their own religious beliefs. Openness to understand and respect these differences is the key to building a harmonious and united society.

He further emphasised that as a country with a diverse religious population, we need to strive to understand and accept religious diversity without criticising or interfering in the personal affairs of others.

"Religious freedom and the right to practice without fear are essential aspects of developing a fair and inclusive society.

"Interfering in the religious affairs of others not only violates personal privacy but can also lead to tension and conflict within the community. It is important to foster an attitude of mutual respect, tolerance and understanding of religious differences for the sake of harmony and collective security," he added.
