SHAH ALAM - Celebrating the remarkable stories of authentic women and their significant contributions to conservation efforts, the World Female Ranger Awards have internationally acknowledged female wildlife rangers for their exemplary dedication and service to wildlife conservation.

The inaugural recipient of the World Female Ranger 'Resilience' Award is Mariani 'Bam' Ramli, the Founder and President of the Gibbon Conservation Society (GCS).

Bam's journey commenced in 2013 when she encountered 'Ellek,' a confiscated infant gibbon.

Despite lacking expertise, Bam volunteered to care for him, immersing herself in learning about gibbons.

This experience ignited her passion, leading her to sell her possessions and establish the GCS, providing a natural sanctuary for distressed gibbons.

Bam's path was not without challenges, facing backlash and accusations of being a 'witch' for speaking out against gibbon ownership.

Undeterred, she persevered, building a robust organisation over the last decade.

Today, GCS operates two rehabilitation projects, and Bam has transitioned from struggling to afford meals to creating livelihood opportunities, especially for women and indigenous communities.

Recently, Bam successfully managed to get a pair of gibbons to relearn their wild behaviors and reproduce.

"To actualise change in wildlife conservation, tangible actions and sustainable partnerships between organisations, women, and indigenous communities need to be applied," Bam reportedly said.

Meanwhile Founder of How Many Elephants and World Female Ranger Week Holly Budge expressed her excitement about the expanded award categories this year and highlighted the significant impact female rangers are making worldwide.

"This year we have multiple award categories and are delighted to give recognition to female rangers, plus providing grants sponsored by How Many Elephants.

"I have seen the tangible impact female rangers are making around the world, protecting wildlife, uplifting communities, and empowering women. I salute all our award winners," she said.
