PSM member allegedly faces charges for obstruction in Perak farmers' eviction protest

SHAH ALAM - PSM central committee member Chong Yee Shan, who sustained injuries during a protest against the eviction of six farmers in Perak, has allegedly been summoned to appear in the Ipoh Magistrate’s Court on Dec 27.
According to a report by a local portal, Chong was notified by the police that she will face charges under Section 186 of the Penal Code, related to obstructing a public servant from discharging their duties.
The offence carries a potential jail term of two years, a fine of up to RM10,000, or both.
PSM, expressing discontent over the situation, believes the case is connected to the Oct 24 incident in Kanthan, Perak.
The eviction itself is currently under dispute in the Ipoh High Court, the report added.
In the incident, Chong suffered injuries to her mouth and nose after allegedly being pushed by an officer from the Perak Land and Mines Office (PTG).
PSM deputy chairperson S Arutchelvan in a statement said despite 45 police reports filed against the PTG officer nationwide, it is Chong, the "victim of state violence," who is now facing charges.
“This investigation and outcome is totally unbecoming. This is a case of double standard when the victim is to be charged while the perpetrator seems vindicated," he reportedly said.
PSM calls for the charges against Chong to be dropped and advocates for a fresh investigation conducted by neutral investigators from other police districts.
