Johor floods: Firemen rescue trapped students, teachers, and senior citizens

JOHOR BAHRU - A total of 38 students, six teachers and two elderly trapped in the flood in Kampung Mohd Amin were rescued by firemen today.

The Johor Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) in a statement said a total of 20 members from the Larkin fire station (BBP) were rushed to the scene of incident after receiving an emergency call at 3.30pm.

"All victims including a disabled elderly person were successfully rescued and sent to a higher and safe area," he said.

Meanwhile, in Pasir Gudang, firemen conducted continuous monitoring in five high risk area, following continuous heavy rain.

The five areas involved are Taman Bunga Ros, Kampung Kangkar Tebrau, Kampung Paya Kenangan, Kampung Pasir Tebrau and Kampung Tengah Tebrau.

"During the patrol, the water level of the river was in an alert state and it was raining heavily when the monitoring was being done.

"Monitoring in Jalan Nyior, Jalan Nipah and Jalan Enau Kampung Kangkar Tebrau found that the water has overflowed to a depth of 0.3 meters.

"Meanwhile, monitoring in Kampung Paya Kenangan found that the water level had risen by one meter in Jalan Kenangan," he said.

In Pontian, a total of eight victims, including three elderly people and three children, were rescued by personnel from Pontian fire station after their house in Kampung Parit Abas, Benut was flooded.

A statement issued by BBP Pontian said that six members were rushed to the scene of the incident upon receiving an emergency call at 3.20pm.

"The victims consisted of two elderly men and one elderly woman suffering. In addition, three children consisted of one boy and two girls.

"There were also two adult women who were rescued. All the victims were sent to a higher area and the victims stayed at a close relative's house.

"So far no temporary flood relief centre has been opened," he said.
