Excessive vehicle loads identified as primary cause of road damage - Nanta
NURUL HUDA HUSAIN, MUHAMMAD SHAMSUL ABD GHANI, DIANA AZIS, FARHANA ABD KADIRSHAH ALAM - Works Minister Datuk Seri Alexander Nanta Linggi has attributed excessive vehicle loads as the main culprit behind road damage, particularly potholes.
He disclosed that discussions on long-term solutions were underway, particularly with the Transport Ministry, which is responsible for enforcement.
"Road usage falls under the purview of both the Works Ministry (KKR) and the Transport Ministry.
"The Road Transport Department (RTD) oversees the enforcement of heavy vehicle bans.
"Therefore, KKR is not the sole entity responsible for implementing such bans.
"Nevertheless, we have engaged in discussions with the Transport Ministry to establish load limits.
"It's evident that road damage is often caused by vehicles exceeding their weight restrictions, contributing to road deterioration.
"To effectively limit the use of overloaded vehicles, coordination with relevant authorities is essential," he highlighted during Sinar's Town Hall session at the Karangkraf Group Auditorium today.
His comments were in response to a question from an audience member regarding the possibility of KKR expanding the scope of heavy vehicle bans during peak hours on controlled highways.
Nanta stressed that various factors must be considered before implementing any measures, including limiting the load capacity of heavy vehicles on specific roads.
"For instance, we must assess whether the road in question traverses an economic zone or is located near a port or industrial area.
"We are concerned that overly stringent heavy vehicle bans on certain roads could negatively impact our economy.
"Therefore, we will carefully evaluate the situation before making any adjustments to specifications," he added.
