KUALA LUMPUR - Child sexual abuse record the highest number at 1,603 cases (up until last August) handled by the Social Welfare Department (JKM).

Women, Family and Community Development Ministry (KPWKM) Datuk Seri Nancy Shukri said this is followed by cases of child neglect, amounting to 1,530 cases.

According to her, there were also 1,240 recorded cases of physical abuse against children, 614 cases attributed to miscellaneous factors, 156 cases of abandonment and 73 cases of emotional abuse.

"The data I have now is the statistics of children in need of protection. Whether it's children we saved from abuse, mistreatment, and various other factors for this year.

"Some of these rescued children are placed in our social welfare institutions, and some have been placed with foster parents," she said in the Dewan Rakyat today.

She said this in response to a supplementary questions from William Leong Jee Keen (PH-Selayang) regarding the statistics of abused children in need of protection.

Nancy added that some of the children were also returned to their families.

"This is after assessing the conditions of the families and confirming that the environment no longer poses a risk to the well-being of these children," she said.
