Wild elephants rampage after car hits baby elephant
GERIK - Three families were left shaken after a group of six elephants attacked their car following an accident at Kilometre 55, East-West Road Gerik-Jeli, near Titiwangsa Rest Area, on Sunday.
Gerik district police chief Superintendent Zulkifli Mahmood said that in the 7.35pm incident, a Perodua Axia car driven by a 48-year-old man with two passengers aged 47 and 23 was travelling from Penang to Jerteh, Terengganu.
"As the car rounded a bend, the driver spotted a group of elephants heading towards Jeli, Kelantan. The car accidentally hit a baby elephant.
"Enraged by the incident, the group of elephants charged towards the car and repeatedly stomped on it, causing significant damage to the left side, bonnet, and rear," he said in a statement today.
The attack ceased when the baby elephant stood up and rejoined the herd.
"At the time of the accident, it was raining lightly, and visibility was reduced due to fog. Fortunately, the driver and two passengers escaped unharmed.
"Police urge motorists using the East-West Road to exercise caution and be aware of the possibility of encountering wild animals crossing the road," Zulkifli added.
