Wan Ahmad Fayhsal for Supreme Council, hopes Bersatu's succession process runs smoothly

SHAH ALAM - As the anticipation builds around the upcoming Parti Pribumi Bersatu Malaysia (Bersatu) election next year, Bersatu Youth Chief Wan Ahmad Fayhsal Wan Ahmad Kamal says he will likely contest for the Supreme Council seat.

He told Sinar Daily he preferred a “smaller” role first after “graduating” from the party’s youth wing, which applies a maximum age limit of 37-years old.

The Machang MP debunked rumours that he would try his luck for the vice-presidency post.

On Bersatu’s top leadership, he said listed three potential names that could succeed its president Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin; they were deputy president Datuk Seri Ahmad Faizal Azumu, secretary-general Datuk Seri Hamzah Zainudin and supreme council member Datuk Seri Azmin Ali, who joined the party after being expelled by Parti Keadilan Rakyat (PKR) in 2018 amid the political crisis now dubbed “Sheraton Move”.

“Hamzah is one of the candidates, Ahmad Faizal, Datuk Seri Azmin very experienced politician too. Azmin is one of the most experienced ones we have.

“But the most important thing is for the succession plan be managed carefully. We do not want any movements or elements of split happening in the party because of a party election,” he said on the sidelines during the sixth Bersatu General Assembly 2023.

Wan Ahmad Fayhsal said there should be proper planning of succession.

Today, Muhyiddin announced that he will not be defending his presidency in the upcoming party election. He decision was to provide space and opportunity for other emerging leaders to lead the party.

He also said looking ahead, the upcoming 18-month party election process would see the emergence of a new leadership.
