Actress Melissa Barrera dropped from 'Scream 7' film for supporting Palestine
Actress Melissa Barrera, known for her role as Sam Carpenter in the rebooted “Scream” franchise, has been dropped from the upcoming film “Scream 7” for showing solidarity with Palestine.
Since the humanitarian crisis unfolded, Barrera, 33 has used her social media platform to express her support for Palestinians, and shared information about the situation in Gaza.
She also shared posts that described Israeli forces attacks as genocide and ethnic cleansing.
In addition, she joined the list of other Hollywood celebrities who urged United States (US) President Joe Biden to call for a ceasefire.
In her Instagram bio, Barrera includes a link to donate to Doctors Without Border and Save the Children.
Spyglass Media Group, the production company behind Scream VII said in a statement that it has zero tolerance for antisemitism or incitement of hate in any form.
"We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.”
Meanwhile, Scream 7 director Christopher Landon said in a since-deleted post on X, formerly Twitter: "Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This was not my decision to make."
Barerra played a key role in both of the hit horror films, as 2022's Scream made $137.7 million in box office revenues globally while Scream V took $168.9 million.
Following the drop, Barrera's fans flooded her comment section with words of encouragement and support.
One fan commented: “We stand with you Queen and we will be boycotting Scream 7”.
Another fan remarked: “Thank you for speaking the truth about what's happening and always happened in Palestine. Much respect”.
Meanwhile another fan said “Please tell me that you being let go from Scream VII isn't true? How could they let you go for calling for a ceasefire?”
As of Monday, the Palestinian death toll in Gaza has risen to 13,000.
