Police investigate Cambodian woman's racist remarks against Malay community
MELAKA - Police have received 14 reports regarding a Cambodian woman who made racist remarks against the Malay community in a recent social media video.
Melaka police chief Datuk Zainol Samah said the reports were lodged after a one minute and seven seconds video was uploaded by an account owner, showing the woman making derogatory remarks about Malays last Sunday.
"The Melaka Criminal Investigation Department has initiated an investigation under Section 505 of the Penal Code for making statements with the intent to incite feelings of hatred among different ethnic groups.
"The case is also being investigated under Section 233 of the Communications and Multimedia Act 1998, which prohibits the use of electronic communication to transmit any material that is false, misleading, or indecent," Zainol said in a statement today.
He urged the public not to speculate about the incident, as this could exacerbate tensions within the community.
In the viral video, the woman, who was conducting a live stream in a Muslimah clothing store, claimed that Cambodians are smarter and more diligent in business than Malays, whom she described as lazy.
Her remarks sparked outrage among netizens, who called for her arrest and deportation.
