'My hope for the country's future will be significantly enhanced if the police and MACC return my iPhone' - Zaid

SHAH ALAM - Former law minister Datuk Mohd Zaid Ibrahim has called for unity and religious harmony in Malaysia, urging the country to preserve its diverse society and reject extremist ideologies.

In a X posting marking the Madani government's first year in power, Zaid commended the government's focus on inclusivity and expressed hope that His Majesty the Sultan of Johor's ascension as the next Agong would further promote moderation and tolerance.

"It's now 12 months since the Madani government came to power, and it's only fitting that we wish the Prime Minister success.

"A three-day celebration in Putrajaya is in the offing.

"What gives me hope is the ascension of His Majesty the Sultan of Johor as our next Agong.

"Undoubtedly, his position as the King will temper the extreme sentiments of Muslims who want to isolate themselves from the Malaysian community.

"More accurately, they want to reconstitute and reconfigure Malaysian society," he said.

Zaid stressed that the segregation government must never be allowed to take hold in Malaysia, highlighting the need to preserve the country's multicultural tapestry.

He also urged the police and MACC to return his confiscated iPhone, questioning the prolonged investigation into his alleged seditious tweet.

"The country's future can only be assured if we preserve and maintain religious harmony. Where living together is possible. Segregation and an apartheid-style government must never be allowed to rule.

"My hope for the country's future will be significantly enhanced if the Police and MACC return my iPhone.

"How long do they need to investigate my so-called seditious tweet?" he added.

Previously, the police confirmed that they took Zaid’s statement following his remarks on Deputy Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi’s discharge not amounting to an acquittal (DNAA).
