BUKIT MERTAJAM - Tragedy unfolded on the Penang Bridge in the wee hours of yesterday morning, once again shedding light on the implications of irresponsible driving and vulnerability of road users. The incident involved a motorcycle, a car driven by a teenager and a lorry, resulting in the untimely death of a young motorcyclist and his female pillion rider.

Seberang Prai Tengah district police chief Assistant Commissioner Tan Cheng San said the collision occurred at Km1.9 of the bridge where the victims, both in their early twenties, had died due to the severity of their injuries sustained during the collision.

Preliminary investigations revealed that the Lexus car, which was heading to Perai from the island, was believed to have hit the back of the lorry, causing it to lose control and hit the motorcycle.

Tan also confirmed that the 16-year-old driver did not have a driving license.

"The teen driver escaped with minor injuries while the lorry driver escaped unhurt," he said, stating that the crash happened at 2.30am.

The teenager was released on police bail, he said but the police have issued a summons against the mother for allowing her son to use the car without a license.
