Will more opposition MPs pledge their support for Anwar?
SHAH ALAM – Over the past months, several Members of Parliament from the opposition party pledge their support for Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim, which raises questions about what is happening within the party.
On Oct 12, Kuala Kangsar MP Datuk Iskandar Dzulkarnain announced his support for Anwar, citing continuous rants from voters and the pressing need to deal with the rising cost of living crisis in his area as the reason for doing so.
On Oct 30, Labuan MP Datuk Suhaili Abdul Rahman followed suit by pledging his support to Anwar, also highlighting the pressing need to fix issues faced by people in his constituency such as high cost of living as well as constant water and electricity interruption.
Iskandar and Suhaili’s Bersatu membership were later suspended for four and six years on Nov 4 and 7 respectively after the party’s disciplinary board convened.
Yesterday, Gua Musang MP Mohd Azizi Abu Naim from Perikatan Nasional (PN) pledged his support to the prime minister, also saying that the decision was made to ensure that the people of the constituency would get benefits including improvement of infrastructure.
In a recent development, Jeli MP Zahari Kechik announced his support for Anwar due to the cost of living as well as difficulties to get basic needs for the people including developmental issues.
These MPs claimed to have acted independently, reiterating that their decisions were not influenced by external pressures.
Aside from the four, internal sources had claimed that there we actually a total of nine individuals expected to pledge their support for the prime minister.
The unusual twist in the political landscape sparked interest and raised questions, particularly with claims in regard to Selangor PN chairman Datuk Seri Azmin Ali.
Claims have surfaced that Azmin had been absent from party’s meetings for a significant period which raised questions about whether he, too, would be one of those who pledged support for Anwar.
At press time, attempts to get Bersatu leaderships for comment were unsuccessful.
