SHAH ALAM – Expert predicts that major floods like the one that occurred at the end of 2021 will not occur this year as Malaysia enters the Northeast Monsoon (MTL) season from December to February.

Universiti Malaya National Antarctic Research centre and Ocean and Earth Sciences Institute Meteorologist Professor Datuk Dr Azizan Abu Samah said however, the country would experience heavy rain in the evening.

“The public must be aware of the risk of flash floods, especially in lower areas with drainage system issues.

“We have entered the MTL season, the phenomenon of monsoon rains will occur which would cause the East Coast area to receive more rainfall,” he told Sinar.

The Malaysian Meteorological Department (MetMalaysia) on Saturday advised the public to be aware of the changes in weather following the expected four to six episodes of heavy rain that could potentially result in flooding in areas at-risk.

Meanwhile, MetMalaysia National Weather and Geophysics Operations Centre Director Dr Fariza Yunus said Kelantan, Terengganu and Pahang were predicted to receive heavy rains from November to December before moving to Johor and Sarawak.

The public could receive the latest information on weather through the official MetMalaysia website and through the official myCuaca application as well as the official social media websites of the department.
