Ceasefire places pressure on Israel, US
SITI AISYAH MOHAMADSHAH ALAM - The ceasefire approved by the United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) on Friday is important to place pressure towards Israel and especially the United States (US).
Geostrategy Expert Professor Dr Azmi Hassan said although it was common knowledge that the resolution proposed by Jordan would not be followed by Israel, it collectively stated the world disapproved of Israel’s actions on Gaza.
He said the matter was intended to make the US feel isolated after the resolution received the support of other major powers such as France.
“The resolution of the United Nations (UN) actually has a legal power, but the problem is that Israel is the state that disregards it the most.
“If we look at the votes, only 14 were against it.
“US and Israel were expected, but the other 12 were small states with their own agendas to gain sympathy in terms of economics and geopolitics,” he said when contacted by Sinar on Sunday.
Azmi added the Two-State Solution was the best way to resolve the Israeli-Palestinian conflict, but it required a major power other than the US to start negotiations.
“Hamas fighters would not want such solutions, they want a One Nation Solution similar to before 1946. This is quite difficult.
“Israel had agreed with the Two-State Solution, but the issue was them taking Palestinian lands bit by bit at the West Bank.
“That’s the reason why Hamas conducted their operations. The mediator of this solution is the US.
“We need other big powers that don’t have their own interests involved to start negotiations such as France,” he said.
MyCare Honorary Advisor Dr Hafidzi Mohd Noor said the UN needed to continue to place pressure through the ceasefire resolution as approved in the UNGA despite the US and Israel ignoring the decision.
He said the attitude of both nations not acknowledging the resolution gave a clear image of the hypocrisy they had.
“What’s important now is the world communities rejecting and performing demonstrations to state their solidarity with Palestine.
“In London, the number has reached almost 300,000 individuals joining in solidarity.
“Despite the United Kingdom (UK) being neutral on the fate of civilians in Gaza, they stand together with the Palestine struggle and support the movement to liberate the nation.
“In the US itself, the Jewish community has gathered to push for the attacks to be stopped.
“The country should hear the international voices that have peaked,” he said.
Hafidzi added UN’s structure should be reshuffled to no longer give the veto powers to US, Russia, China, France and the UK which were the nations that won in the Second World War.
“Imagine, the war had happened over 70 years ago and they were still clinging on to the powers to control the world’s decisions.
“Previously, Russia’s suggestion to stop the attacks and send humanitarian aid through the Rafah border, Egypt was objected to by the US and the UN Safety Committee which were the highest body.
“The US often uses its absolute power to prevent any resolutions in favour of Palestine.
“In this situation, the ceasefire needs to be enforced and security forces should be sent there,” he said.
