SHAH ALAM - The United Nations General Assembly (UNGA) is finding it difficult to reach a decision on implementing a ceasefire to resolve the ongoing war between Israel and Palestine.

Former Prime Minister, Tun Dr Mahathir Mohamad stated that the United Nations (UN) has failed to address the political and humanitarian issues in Gaza.

He said that the 'war' has already claimed over 8,000 innocent lives.

"They (UN) cannot make any decisions because they are influenced by some of the world's veto powers.

"If one country with a veto disagrees with a ceasefire during the UNGA meeting, then no solution can be reached.

"They (Israel) have forgotten that when they were oppressed by the Nazis, they sought help, but now they are behaving worse than the 'German Nazis' by launching more aggressive attacks on the Hamas fighters and the people of Gaza," he said during a press conference at the Thousand Malay Women Gathering held at the Ideal Convention Centre (IDCC) here on Saturday.

On Friday, the UNGA adopted a resolution sponsored by Jordan with the aim of calling for an immediate ceasefire, as well as the unimpeded delivery of humanitarian aid and essential services to the Gaza Strip.

According to the UN News website, the vote during the 10th Emergency Special Session saw the resolution receiving 120 votes in favor, 14 against, and 45 abstentions.

"The Palestinian people have been struggling to reclaim their homeland and rights after all they own has been seized by Israel," he said.
