Toilet fire prank: Victim's mother claims case only went to prosecution after viral video
SHAH ALAM – The mother of a 16-year old teenager who died in a fire at a public toilet after his two friends pulled a prank on him claims that the investigating papers on the case were only handed over to the prosecution after her video about her son went viral on social media.
The woman known as Cek Jenna on TikTok shared the note she kept on the chronology of the case following the sentencing of the two teenagers yesterday to 100 hours of community service to clean public toilets for causing mischief by fire.
In the video, the woman claimed that her son Muhamad Damin Mikhail Kansol died due to the prank on Aug 28, last year and the case was referred to the Sungai Buloh two months later.
However, she said in December of that year, the case was handed over to the prosecution before it was returned to the police due to a lack of evidence.
She claimed that there was no update on the case between January and May this year until she posted a video of herself in June sharing a story of what happened on the day of her son's death.
"Only after the video went viral, the case was handed over to the prosecution again," the note said.
She claimed that the two teenagers were charged on Aug 28, a year after her son's death, but she could not listen to the proceedings.
Yesterday, the two teenagers, both 16, were sentenced to community service of washing toilets for 100 hours over a period of six months by the Kuala Selangor magistrate’s court after they pleaded guilty to causing mischief by fire involving a public toilet, last year.
Magistrate Siti Hajar Ali also ordered a good behaviour bond of RM1,000 each for two years in addition to reporting to the nearest police station once a month during the same period.
According to the charge sheet, the duo, who were still schooling, committed the offence which caused the destruction of the public toilet of a futsal court in Phase 3 of Bandar Puncak Alam here at 2.47pm on Aug 28, last year.
As a result of the prank, Damin was found dead in the fire.
