Two men held for attempted murder of cop, armed robbery
IPOH - Police arrested two local men for the attempted murder of a cop on duty in an incident in Kampung Gajah, yesterday.
Hilir Perak district police chief ACP Ahmad Adnan Basri said the police received a report on an armed robbery at 11.30am yesterday and the case was investigated by the Ipoh district police headquarters (IPD).
He said acting on information, a police team from the Ipoh IPD CID successfully tracked down the suspects from Ipoh to Kampung Gajah.
"When the suspects, aged 28 and 31 realised that police had caught up with their Perodua Myvi in Kampung Gajah, they tried to escape by making a sudden U-turn and reversed the vehicle into a police vehicle," he said in a statement today.
Ahmad Adnan said one of the policemen tried to open the back door of the vehicle to arrest the suspect sitting in the back. However, the driver reversed recklessly and dragged the cop, causing the policeman to fire a shot at the windshield of the vehicle to defend himself.
"But the suspect continued driving the car in reverse gear until he crashed into another vehicle. At that moment, the suspect in the back seat tried to flee but was arrested by police.
"At the same time, the driver drove off but he was eventually arrested in Kampung Rapat, Ipoh," he said.
Ahmad Adnan said the policeman involved was unhurt while the suspect driver who suffered a gunshot wound on his right shoulder was treated at Raja Permaisuri Bainun Hospital in Ipoh.
He said a check revealed that the driver had 24 previous criminal records while the other suspect had 11 previous records, and police also found packets of suspected heroin and weapons believed to have been used in the robbery.
He said the case was investigated under Section 307 of the Penal Code and Section 39 of the Arms Act 1960. - BERNAMA
