'Can afford luxury cars but reluctant to pay off Mara loan' - Asyraf Wajdi
NILAM NUR ATIKAH OSHMANSHAH ALAM - The Majlis Amanah Rakyat (Mara) chairman Datuk Dr Asyraf Wajdi Dusuki is surprised that some borrowers from the institution are appealing not to face legal action for not repaying their education loans despite having the means to own luxurious cars.
In a Facebook post, Asyraf Wajdi said this should not have been the case.
"Some of the borrowers messaged me, asking me to consider their appeal to avoid legal action by Mara, and they assured me that the loans would be settled soon.
"But when I look at their Facebook profile, it looks like they are living a rather stylish and luxurious lifestyle, owning a Mercedes car. But when it comes to repaying their education loan, they are reluctant," he said.
Asyraf stressed that everyone should understand the importance and knowledge of personal financial management, including prioritising spending wisely to avoid future financial burdens.
He said there was nothing wrong with leading a luxurious life, but one should settle their debts first if they want to live a well-organised life and receive blessings.
"It is essential to always remember that the main principle in financial management from an Islamic perspective is to settle debts rather than spending extravagantly.
“The Prophet also warned that the sins of a martyr are forgiven by Allah except for their debts," he said.
