'Singgit Seposen' programme: 26 tonnes of recycled wastes collected since 2021

MELAKA - A total of 26,000 kilogrammes (kg) of recycled wastes were successfully collected, for which RM13,000 was paid through six 'Singgit Seposen' programmes organised in the state since 2021.

Perbadanan Teknologi Hijau Melaka (PTHM) chief executive officer Ismail Hashim said of the total, 7,000 kg were collected through two programmes this year, involving a total payment of RM4,000.

He said through the programme, seven recyclable wastes namely cooking oil, fabric, electronics, aluminum cans, glass bottles, paper and plastic bottles were purchased from consumers at prices ranging from 10 cents to RM2.50 per kg, depending on the waste category.

"Consumers’ response to the 'Singgit Seposen' programme has been very encouraging thus showing that people are more aware of recycling.

"This programme makes it easier for consumers to dispose of recycled wastes, while allowing them to generate income and help reduce carbon dioxide emissions," he told reporters after a Singgit Seposen programme here today.

Ismail said the 'Singgit Seposen' programme involved various parties, including neighbouring communities, local communities, state and private government agencies, higher education institutions and schools.

The programme, he said, was implemented through allocations channelled by the state government to empower various programmes related to green technology in Melaka.

Meanwhile, Pengkalan Batu assemblyman Datuk Kalsom Nordin said that the programme will be expanded and held more often in the constituency so that recycled wastes can be managed more efficiently thus avoiding them from being thrown into rivers, drains or drainage, which would eventually cause various problems such as floods and pollution.

Apart from collection of recycled wastes, she also hoped that talks related to the importance of recycling and protecting the environment would be held at the Singgit Seposen programme to increase community awareness. - BERNAMA
