SHAH ALAM - In a twist that is set to make even the road to Genting Highlands a rollercoaster ride, toll collection is looming on the horizon.

According to Sin Chew Daily, a spokesman for Lingkaran Cekap Sdn Bhd said the company would be managing the toll and that drivers would only be charged when they head up to the tourist spot. The descent will be toll-free.

“"Lingkaran Cekap is responsible for the roads in Genting, including slopes, landslide prevention, tree clearing, grass cutting, waste disposal systems, and streetlights, and most importantly, road maintenance.

"Genting Malaysia Bhd (Genting Malaysia) has been maintaining the roads in the highlands since their construction in the mid-60s," the spokesman said.

Recently, a picture of a structure being installed on Jalan Batang Kali-Gohtong Jaya went viral, drawing the attention of Internet users and leading to speculation about the possible construction of a toll plaza.

However, the spokesman could not confirm the implementation date or the toll rates and denied claims that the toll collection would begin at rates of RM2.50 and RM3 starting from June 2024.

He added that this matter required further discussion before an official announcement was made.

"Toll rates will take into account the costs and maintenance work for this road," he said.
