SHAH ALAM - Politicians in the country should be closely monitored in order to uphold their performance and the nation's reputation through the implementation of periodic audits and reviews.

Former Inspector-General of Police Tan Sri Musa Hassan said the proposed formation of an independent body would facilitate in controlling the behaviour of politicians and the activities they engage in.

"Any politician who violates disciplinary laws or laws governing politicians should be subject to disciplinary punishment by this independent authority.

"If you really have the passion to bring Malaysia forward, do not focus too much on actions and mere rhetoric," he told Sinar.

It was reported that former Prime Minister Datuk Seri Ismail Sabri Yaakob suggested that the government should establish an independent monitoring agency and be given the authority to conduct audits.

He added it should entail routine checking of the conduct of public servants, particularly politicians, to make sure that they adhere to accepted norms.

Musa said the independent body also should collaborate with government agencies like the Malaysian Anti-Corruption Commission (MACC) and police to prevent abuse of power and corruption.

He added in order to respond appropriately, politicians needed to have strong communication abilities, be able to talk clearly, and listen intently to the people’s ideas.
