SHAH ALAM - Lifestyle influencer Syamimia has been the target of severe criticism after being accused of not sharing or showing concern for the plight of the Palestinian people during the current crisis.

Some netizens believed that, as an influencer, Syamimia should use her social media platform to raise awareness about the situation in Gaza.

The TikTok content creator witnessed a rapid drop in her follower count, losing hundreds of thousands of fans in a matter of hours.

The backlash led to a continuous decline in her fan base.

In response to the criticism, Syamimia explained her perspective in a 4-minute and 40-second video on TikTok.

"The reason I remained silent is because I aspire to achieve significant accomplishments in life, to help and support those in need.

"This extends beyond just Palestine," she said.

Syamimia revealed her desire to concentrate on her family and provide them with financial support, specifically mentioning her younger brother, husband, son, and father.

She stressed that the most she can offer is her prayers, believing in their profound impact.

Some netizens questioned why Syamimia didn't use her substantial platform to raise awareness about the Palestinian issue or contribute in some way, given her large following.

"Not sharing doesn't necessarily imply a lack of awareness, knowledge, or compassion.

"My approach is influenced by my surroundings, and I've come to feel that contributing is futile, as the responses I receive are often selective and biased," she added.

She also pointed out that people should strive to better themselves and support what is just.

She encouraged her audience to not only offer prayers but also consider donating clothing and medicine to verified charitable organisations.

"Nothing I say suggests that I don't support Palestine; if you can do good, do it completely.

"You want to do good for our family as well as for the country of Palestine.

"I love my brothers and sisters in Palestine," she said.

In her video, she directly addressed a comment from a user, @kiwimok.ent, who had stated, "Being silent or neutral is the same as siding with the oppressor."

Following the backlash, Syamimia offered a public apology during a live TikTok session.

"The video was removed not out of fear of losing followers, not due to my ego, not because of my desire to be right, but because the barrage of insults became overwhelming and brought shame to my name.

"I also apologise if I didn't live up to the 'influencer' title you associated with me.

"The immense negativity directed at me was regrettable, and I hope we can all seek forgiveness.

"My intent was never to disrupt anyone," she said.
