PETALING JAYA - Erectile challenges, often associated with conditions like erectile dysfunction (ED), can affect a wide range of individuals, regardless of age as these challenges can stem from various physical and psychological factors, making it vital to approach them holistically within the context of one's lifestyle.

According to Guards Health Consultant Urologist Dr George Lee Eng Geap or better known as Dr G, the pivotal role of sleep is important in maintaining erectile health.

Dr G said erectile health is closely related to not just the importance of sleep, but a minimum of seven hours of high-quality rest.

"My perspective on sleep and its relationship to erectile health extends to a nuanced understanding of how sleep impacts the intricate web of physiological and psychological factors contributing to sexual well-being.

"When individuals prioritize getting at least 7 hours of sleep per night, they enable their bodies to repair and regenerate.

"This renewal process plays a critical role in optimizing hormonal balance and overall physical vitality, both of which are the foundation to a healthy sex life," Dr G said at the Alpro Pharmacy in collaboration with Viatris men's health teleconsult forum.

However, the significance of sleep doesn't stop at the physical realm as quality sleep has been associated with enhanced mental health, contributing to reduced stress and anxiety levels.

Dr G added that these psychological benefits, in turn, can boost one's sexual confidence and overall performance, and a well-rested mind is better equipped to engage in the intimate and emotional aspects of sexual health.

"I encourages individuals to establish a structured sleep routine like going to bed and waking up at consistent times, which helps regulate the body's internal clock, promoting the synchronization of various biological processes, including those associated with sexual function.

Meanwhile, Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia Senior Consultant Psychiatrist Dr Hatta Sidi acknowledges the difficulties many face when trying to incorporate regular exercise into their hectic daily schedules.

"To address this, I suggests introducing vitamin D and effective time management into one's lifestyle.

"Whether it's dedicating time to activities like jogging or embracing the relaxing benefits of yoga, these lifestyle changes not only promote physical health but can also enhance sexual well-being," Dr Hatta said.

Dr Hatta added by focusing on these lifestyle challenges, individuals can take proactive steps to overcome obstacles that may affect their erectile health.

This comprehensive approach offers a pathway to not only addressing erectile concerns but also nurturing a healthier, more satisfying life.
