PASIR MAS - Eight members of the Pasir Mas Fire and Rescue Station (BBP) have invented the first remote control lifebuoy in Malaysia.

The Rescue Buoy Control (RBC) is meant to rescue victims in the water especially in dangerous conditions at sea or in rapids and headwaters.

Pasir Mas BBP chief, Assistant Fire Superintendent Mohd Azmi Hussin said that RBC is able to reach a victim in the water at a distance of up to 200 metres or beyond whether the firefighters are on land or in a boat.

According to him, the device will act to reduce the risk of danger faced by rescue teams in operations such as drowning as well as floods.

He pointed out that a victim only need to reach the buoy sent over using a remote control and hold onto it tightly to be pulled over back to the mainland with a rope.

"In rescue operations especially in areas with a strong current, firefighters and other rescue teams need to go to high-risk and life-threatening areas. Some almost drown and had even lost their lives to save the victims.

"The invention of RBC by the Rantau Mas fire department will help reduce the risk of danger towards safety personnel in water operations as well as ensuring that vistims are also successfully rescued," he told Sinar yesterday.

In the meantime, Azmi said that his team had spent almost a year on research before successfully inventing the remote control life-buoy that will be taken to 2023 Ministerial Level Innovative and Creative Group Convention competition this November.

He revealed that the project involved a cost of almost RM2,000 and anticipated that it would play a significant role to rescue victims of water-related disasters.

He added that the device is able to accommodate passengers weighing up to 150 kilogrammes and help them stay afloat in the water.

"We hope that this invention will help save more lives not only of the victims, but also that of safety personnel involved in an operation.

"This tool will be patented as an invention from Pasir Mas BBP before it can be widely used in the future," he said.
