KUALA LUMPUR - A total of 19 people - eight men and 11 women - affected by flash floods around Kampung Periuk in Chow Kit have been moved to the temporary relief centre at Dewan Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Puteri Wilayah today.

Titiwangsa Fire and Rescue Station Senior Operations Commander Mohamad Riduan Akhyar said eight firemen, together with other rescue agencies, took about two hours to transfer the victims.

He said that during the incident, the Fire and Rescue Department (JBPM) was carrying out flood monitoring operations around the capital city following heavy rain and when it reached the location, it found that the water level was rising.

"The process of transferring the victims to the centre went smoothly. Rain has stopped now and the water level is subsiding,” he told Bernama after they had completed transferring the victims.

Meanwhile, one of the victims, 40-year-old Tuan Sharifah Tuan Long, 40, said she was spending time with her children when they suddenly noticed the rising water level.

"It rained heavily for just 30 minutes, then I heard a siren. After that, we saw the fire department and other rescue agencies arrive and instructed us to get out and be moved to the relief centre," she said.

Another victim, who only wanted to be known as Azman, in his 40s, said today’s incident was quite surprising because the village had not experienced floods in two years.

"I didn’t expect the heavy rain today to result in flooding. Like it or not, our family had to leave the house and follow the instructions of the rescue team," he said - BERNAMA
