BENTONG - Umno supreme council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said that the high turnout in the Pelangai by-election so far signals victory for the Barisan Nasional (BN) candidate.

He said that with an hour left to vote, he is confident that the turnout will continue to increase.

"This is BN's area; the voter turnout is high, so BN would win.

"Not all young people vote for them (Perikatan Nasional)," he told Sinar Harian at Felda Chemomoi today.

As of 4pm, the Election Commission (EC) updated the voter turnout to be 69 per cent compared to the target of 75 per cent.

The full results and total turnout will only be officially announced after the counting process is completed.

A total of 16,456 voters had chosen their new representative at the poll.

The election came about as the seat was declared vacant following the death of its incumbent from BN, Datuk Seri Johari Harun, who was involved in a plane crash in Elmina, Shah Alam, Selangor on Aug 17.

It saw a three-cornered competition as Perikatan Nasional (PN) fielded Kasim Samat, who had also contested the 15th General Election (GE15) last year, while BN fielded a local Datuk Amizar Abu Adam, followed by an independent candidate, Haslihelmy DM. Zulhasli.
