Move aside Gen Z - meet the seniors rocking social media
One of the admirable traits of these seniors is their brazen embrace of the aging process - they are not trying hard to be young again. They are simply enjoying life and taking along the audience for the ride, giving the younger ones a different perspective of cherishing those precious years. This certainly takes you out of the tunnel vision about what your retired life should look like! Age is, after all, just a number.
Here are some seniors who have cracked the code on social media influencing.
Chef Wan
Even before social media platforms existed, Chef Wan was already an established personality on the small screen, having hosted a multitude of cooking shows. Now he gives Malaysians a sneak peek inside his daily life, often sharing health updates and travel stories. On Instagram, he has over 1 million followers! Find him on Instagram @_chefwan58.
Okdong_fit
This Korean elderly couple shows you what a healthy marriage looks like (literally). Known as @okdong_fit on social media, this 61 and 56-year-old pair regularly shares their wellness journey with the world. They might be in their 50s and 60s, but their incredible physique says otherwise! From morning workouts to lifting weights at the gym and traveling, they truly inspire people across generations to stay healthy. Their Instagram and TikTok combined have about 600,000 followers.
Grandma_Droniak
“Hello I’m a celebrity and a 93-year-old grandma” reads the bio description of this influencer on her TikTok page (@grandma_droniak). On her Instagram page, she labels herself as a fashion model. Grandma_Droniak whose real name is Lillian Droniak has garnered a mass following of 11.8 million on TikTok thanks to her cheeky content about her life as a single nonagenarian. She once went massively viral over a video she made about her funeral rules which entails things like “cry but not too much” and “Bertha isn’t invited”, leaving her followers intrigued to know more and wanting her to spill the tea. Often giving internet users a good chuckle with her sassy attitude, her comments section is constantly flooded with the younger crowd enthralled by her comedic remarks.
Grandpa Chan
This is a story born out of the unconditional love grandparents have for their grandchildren. Two Korean grandparents started a TikTok account with a heartfelt mission of connecting with their four grandchildren. Now, they have 2.6 million followers on TikTok (@grandpachan) thanks to their cute dance routines that keep up with the latest trends. Many leave comments, wishing the old couple could be their grandparents too.
Joan MacDonald
Joan MacDonald rose to popularity at the age of 71 when she embarked on a new fitness journey. Her daughter, Michelle created a social media account for her mother for fun, but that now boasts 1.8 million followers. What transpired in her health journey was the need to make a drastic lifestyle change to improve her health - she was on multiple medications for high blood pressure, high cholesterol, and acid reflux. Now she’s lifting heavy weights, doing upper-body, leg, glutes, and hamstring workouts like a pro! If you need some inspiration to work out, check out her account @trainwithjoan.
