Ship worker suspected of drowning after falling into ocean

ISKANDAR PUTERI - A foreign worker was suspected of drowning after falling off a vessel into the ocean at Block 15 of the Tanjung Pelepas Port (PTP), Gelang Patah near here on Tuesday.

Iskandar Puteri Fire and Rescue Station Operations Commander Senior Assistant Fire Chief Superintendent Mohd Khairi Zainuddin said he received the emergency call on the incident at 11.12am.

24 Iskandar Puteri BBP personnel and Skudai BBP Water Rescue Team (PPDA) were rushed to the scene.

“The victim who was a Bangladeshi man known as Miah Md Ujjal had fallen into the ocean at a height of six metres while working at the Als Clivia ship.

“The search and rescue (SAR) operations were conducted by two PPDA personnel at the location of where the victim fell with a radius of 25 metres extending out the sides of the ship,” he said in a statement on Wednesday.

He said SAR operations were stopped temporarily at 3.15pm due to the currents reaching over 2 knots and were dangerous for the PPDA team before it was continued as per normal at 4.18pm when the weather subsided.

He said operations were still underway to find the victim.
