KUALA LUMPUR - Azerbaijan's President Ilham Aliyev is optimistic that the ongoing 74th International Astronautical Congress (IAC) in Baku, Azerbaijan, from Oct 2 to 6, will significantly contribute to the development of the space industry and the modernisation of advanced technologies in the country.

"Modernisation reflects Azerbaijan’s vision and plans for the future,” said Aliyev in his opening address at the Baku Congress Centre on Monday (Oct 2) which was made available to Bernama by the Azerbaijan embassy in Malaysia.

Meanwhile, Clay Mowry, president of the International Astronautical Federation, extended greetings to all participants of the congress and highlighted the important role played by the IAC in uniting the global space community, particularly in challenging geopolitical times.

The IAC's return to Baku marks a significant milestone, precisely 50 years after the city hosted the 24th edition of the congress, solidifying its status as the first and only city in the region to do so.

This event holds paramount importance to Azerbaijan's space industry development, reflecting a core priority in the country's vision. Azerbaijan aspires to foster the creation of a regional space ecosystem and bolster its standing as an emerging space nation.

The IAC 2023 has drawn more than 5,000 participants to Baku. In addition to exploring the latest advancements in space, attendees have an opportunity to experience the unparalleled hospitality and authentic culture of Azerbaijan. - BERNAMA
