BENTONG - Barisan Nasional (BN) chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Zahid Hamidi admits that the party would be in the 'underdog' situation to wrest the Kemaman seat from Pas if a by-election is held.

However, he was optimistic that BN would be able to win the seat if they worked hard.

“We know our candidate gained 37,000 votes and Pas gained 65,000 votes, that’s a large majority.

“Although we are in an underdog situation, we are confident that voters would choose correctly and return to support BN.

“In politics, anything can happen,” he said in a press conference after the Myfuture Jobs Career Carnival with Malaysian Women and Family Affairs Council (Hawa) at Felda Chemomoi, here, today.

When asked whether BN would maintain its candidate state Umno liaison body chairman Datuk Seri Ahmad Said if there was a by-election, Zahid said it has yet to be decided.

“We will decide after thorough observations were done on the candidates,” he said.

On Sept 26, the Kuala Terengganu election court annulled Pas' candidate Kemaman MP Che Alias Hamid’s victory in the 15th General Election (GE15).

On Jan 3, Ahmad said he filed a petition seeking for the court to overturn the GE15 results for Marang, Kemaman and Kuala Terengganu parliamentary constituencies.

Ahmad as the Kemaman BN candidate said the petition was filed as there were allegations of bribery in the constituencies.
