Former 'special constable' member recalls fighting communists in Johor
JOHOR BAHRU - Even though 66 years have passed, the memories of fighting the communists are still fresh in the mind of former "special constable" member Awang Daud, 88.
Awang said he was 22 years old when he joined the unit with his cousin in 1955.
He recounted one of his experiences during the emergency era in 1957, when he and his teammates were deployed to Kampung Kota Kecil, Kota Tinggi, to stop communist violence in the village.
"We went undercover as garbage collectors and drain cleaners.
"On the fifth day of our disguise, around 2am, a communist leader entered a resident's house.
"One of our members shot him, but he managed to escape. I chased him down and hit him twice with the back of my rifle, killing him on the spot," he said.
Awang shared his story with reporters after attending the Award Ceremony of the Johor Contingent National Service Medal (PJPN) earlier today.
A total of 92 people received PJPN, consisting of retired police, ex-police, emergency-era personnel, members still serving, and their widows or heirs.
