Lorry plows into vehicles clearing path for convoy, claiming two lives

PUTRAJAYA - Two individuals died in an accident involving six vehicles, including two lorries, along Persiaran Utara heading towards Presint 12 here today.

According to a CCTV footage that went viral on social media, several cars were stopped on the highway to make way for outriders escorting a convoy.

A spokesperson from the Putrajaya Fire and Rescue Department said that a team of firefighters from Fire and Rescue Station Presint 7 and Presint 14 rushed to the scene after receiving a distress call at 10.24am.

"The firefighters were assisted by a Light Fire Rescue Tender (FRT) and an Emergency Medical Rescue Service (EMRS) unit at the scene.

"The accident involved two motorcycles, two lorries, and two cars, with a total of nine individuals, including two confirmed fatalities," he said in a statement.

Meanwhile, Putrajaya district police chief Assistant Commissioner Asmadi Abdul Aziz reportedly said the lorry had attempted to change lanes and failed to brake on time, crashing into six cars, three motorcycles, a police outrider’s motorcycle and two lorries.

"Review of closed-circuit television (CCTV) footage at the location leading to Puchong near the East Avenue exit indicated that a lorry from behind is believed to have changed lanes before colliding with several vehicles that had stopped at the scene.

"The collision resulted in the deaths of two individuals, while several others sustained injuries," he said in a statement on Wednesday.

He added that the lorry driver involved has been detained for further investigation.

"The lorry driver will undergo a urine screening for further action.

"Injured individuals have been taken for treatment at Putrajaya Hospital and Serdang Hospital," he added.

The investigation is being investigated under Section 41(1) of the Road Transport Act 1987.
