Former Banting assemblyman Lau Weng San is the new Selangor Speaker
SHAH ALAM - Former Banting assemblyman Lau Weng San was appointed as Selangor State Legislative Assembly Speaker today.
He replaces Sekinchan assemblyman Ng Suee Lim, who is now the Selangor Local Government and Tourism exco.
"I have been elected as Speaker by solemnly taking an oath to fulfill my responsibilities and profess loyalty to the state of Selangor to choose and protect and defend the state of Selangor," he said while taking the oath at the Selangor state assembly earlier today.
Lau was elected after a vote between the government and the opposition.
Lau, who was nominated by the Pakatan Harapan (PH) and Barisan Nasional (BN) coalition, received 34 votes.
The opposition's nominee, Mohd Fuad Mohd Salleh from Perikatan Nasional (PN), received 22 votes.
Mohd Kamri Kamaruddin from Bukit Antarabangsa was elected as Deputy Speaker.
He received 24 votes, defeating Sungai Ramal assemblyman Mohd Shafie Ngah from PN, who received 22 votes.
Lau's appointment was a condition set by the DAP in exchange for handing over the Dusun Tua state assembly to BN.
The PH-BN coalition won the Selangor state election on Aug 12, winning 34 out of 56 state legislative assembly seats.
On Aug 21, 10 assemblymen took the oath as Members of the Selangor State Government Meeting Council (MMKN) in front of the Sultan of Selangor, Sultan Sharafuddin Idris Shah.
