Over 260 arrested in Iran on anniversary of Mahsa Amini's death
TEHRAN - Security authorities in Iran say they detained more than 260 people on the anniversary of Jina Mahsa Amini's death, according to local media, as authorities issued a heavy crackdown to avoid renewed protests.
The 260 arrests were made in the space of 24 hours, and on the anniversary of some of Iran's largest protests in recent history, German news agency (dpa) quoted the report by Shargh newspaper on Sunday.
Security authorities said the arrests were made due to violations of public security, inciting protests and possession of weapons.
The death of the 22-year-old Iranian Kurdish woman Amini, arrested by the morality police for allegedly flouting mandatory dress codes, marked its first anniversary on Saturday. Her death in custody triggered a wave of violent protests across Iran in late 2022.
Ahead of the anniversary, Iranian forces had taken strict security measures to prevent a renewed wave of marches. - BERNAMAQ-dpa
