SHAH ALAM - Most people who voted in a poll on the X Sinar@SinarOnline app said they agree with the proposal to reintroduce the Goods and Services Tax (GST).

62.2 per cent of the 304 people who voted in the poll agreed with the proposal, while 37.8 per cent disagreed.

The poll was open for 24 hours starting at 12.22pm yesterday.

There have been calls from various parties to reintroduce the GST system, especially to address tax leakage issues.

However, Prime Minister Datuk Seri Anwar Ibrahim has yet to make any decision on whether to reintroduce the GST or not.

On Monday, Deputy Finance Minister I Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan said that his ministry had also received feedback from Members of Parliament and would discuss the matter in the Dewan Rakyat on Monday.

Meanwhile, some people who voted in the poll questioned the need to reintroduce the GST.

One user, @61_garuda, asked why the GST should be reintroduced when it was used by Pakatan Harapan (PH) to allegedly slander former prime minister Datuk Seri Najib Razak.

The GST is a consumption tax that was introduced in Malaysia in 2015. It was abolished in 2018 by the PH government.
