SPX records 40-fold rise in women workers as part of its two-year women empowerment drive
KUALA LUMPUR - Popular local e-commerce courier service provider, SPX has seen an stunning 40-fold increase in women employees in its workforce as the courier company celebrates its second year of empowering women in what is traditionally viewed as a male-centric industry.
What makes this statistic even more impressive is that SPX has employed these women in various management roles, including supervisors, hub and shift leaders, as well as positions within the operations division, such as sorting, delivery and courier services.
The company shared its achievement in a statement today, announcing that 13 per cent of its couriers making deliveries and 40 per cent of its sorters are women, and that SPX is the only e-commerce courier company in Malaysia that is led by a woman director, Cheah Lee Sun.
"I welcome the involvement of women in the local courier industry and I don’t view it as being dominated by men. No work is too tough for women here, whether it’s lifting heavy packages or driving commercial vehicles,” the SPX chief said, adding that the company has implemented an open policy for workers to report integrity or harrassment related issues annoynmously.
She explained that the Acting Area Manager programme, which provides employees the leeway of managing their delivery schedule while they build their careers, enabled mothers to send their children to school as they managed their deliveries before their shifts ended.
Cheah also shared that a company culture that valued policies and discipline had developed, leading to the birth of a community centred around safe conduct during customer deliveries, thanks to its inclusive hiring policies.
"Based on observations I made following them during their shifts, I found they were more patient, polite and considerate towards the people around them,” she added.
A model SPX employee, Siti Sakinah Yusof, 33, who started off at the company as a contract supervisor at the South Kuala Terengganu hub, ended up being offered a permanent position due to her strong integrity and work ethics.
"Women should know how to protect themselves and to never hesitate at admonishing those who are unethical,” the mother of three told Bernama recently.
The company has also recently announced that their couriers have worked together to deliver 15,000 free copies of a book entitled Unveiling Malaysian Gems to customers while flying the Jalur Gemilang and taking photos on Sept 16 in conjunction with the Malaysia Day celebrations.
The book showcases women-owned businesses in every state, along with efforts to support women in communities by employing them in their businesses.
