'Don't toy with religion,' Ahmad Maslan tells Muhyiddin
SITI AISYAH MOHAMADSHAH ALAM - Perikatan Nasional (PN) chairman Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin is urged not to toy with religion by releasing ‘political fatwa’ to campaign in the Pulai Parliamentary by-election on Sept 9.
Umno Supreme Council member Datuk Seri Ahmad Maslan questioned whether it was appropriate for the former prime minister to release a statement that it was haram for individuals to vote for Pakatan Harapan (PH) candidate Suhaizan Kayat.
He said the public and voters knew that the political fatwa was confusing and wrong.
"We use politics for Islam's sovereignty, not the other way around.
"This meant we will not use Islam simply for political importance," he said in a post on X on Monday.
Media on Sunday reported Muhyiddin released a fatwa that it was haram to vote for Suhaizan in the Pulai by-election during his speech in the PN Ceramah Perdana in Kempas, Johor on Saturday.
The speech had Muhyiddin claiming it was a show of rejection and anger of voters following the unity government's failure to aid the public who was in need with the cost of living issues.
Ahmad said the public must reject the party in Pulai and Simpang Jeram, Johor.
