Only EC has power on redelineation - Guan Eng
KAMPAR - DAP describes Perikatan Nasional's (PN) claim that the unity government would amend the Federal Constitution for additional electoral districts if it owned two-thirds majority in Dewan Rakyat as baseless.
Its chairman, Lim Guan Eng, said the constituency border management for all election areas is under the Election Commission’s (EC) jurisdiction.
"It is decided by the EC, and I did not receive any information. It should be him (Tan Sri Muhyiddin Yassin) asking the EC, not our (unity government) side.
"Surely as a former prime minister, he would know under the Federal Constitution that the ones deciding the matter were none other than the EC.
"If he didn’t know, it would be difficult for us to admit he was an eligible prime minister on the basis of not understanding the Federal Constitution," he told reporters after officiating Kampar MP People’s Service Centre here on Sunday.
He added that the issue played up by the opposition did not explain that it would not affect the votes for Pakatan Harapan (PH) in the Pulai Parliament and Simpang Jeram state seat by-election on Sept 9.
"We maintained powers in three states for this election; of course that’s a political game by those good at slandering.
"I hope the people can clearly see the right and wrongs. They can do anything they want, including raise baseless issues," he said.
Sinar reported Muhyiddin claimed the government would amend the Federal Constitution by adding more election districts, from 222 to 300 seats.
He said the measures could be stopped by ensuring Pulai Parliament PN candidate Zulkifli Jaafar wins to deny the two-thirds majority for the unity government.
The Pulai Parliamentary seat witnessed a three-corner clash between Zulkifli, Johor Parti Amanah Negara (Amanah) deputy chairman Suhaizan Kayat, and independent candidate Samsudin Mohamad Fauzi after the death of its incumbent, the late Datuk Seri Salahuddin Ayub, on July 23.
