SHAH ALAM - Selangor Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Amirudin Shari filed a defamation suit against Kedah Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Muhammad Sanusi Md Nor over an allegation that the leader was involved in a scandal with Berjaya Group founder Tan Sri Vincent Tan involving a Klang River cleanup project.

Amirudin's lawyer Haijan Omar confirmed that the suit was filed at the Shah Alam High Court on Wednesday with a copy of the cause paper handed over to the defendant.

Haijan said that a copy of the writ of summons had also been submitted to the lawyer representing Sanusi from Messrs. Faizi Associates.

"We had already filed a certain procedure and will enter a memorandum for the defence besides also asking for an injunction that will be made in other proceedings.

"The court set Oct 3 for case management," he said as reported by a portal today.

On Aug 4, Amirudin as reported by Sinar Harian announced that he would take a legal action against Sanusi over a defamatory statement.

It follows the Pas leader's speech on Aug 2 at Perikatan Nasional (PN) Best 'Sayangi Kedah Sejahtera' Mega Roadshow in which an allegation of a scandal between Amirudin and Vincent who wanted to implement a project worth RM10 billion in Sungai Klang was made.

Amirudin also revealed that his party had detailed the river cleaning project at length at Selangor state assembly last year and early this year as well as in the parliament last March 1.

Following that, on Aug 9, Amirudin's legal team delivered a letter of demand to Sanusi asking the defendant to apologise within 48 hours and pay RM10 million in damage.

In the writ of summons, Amirudin as the plaintiff reportedly demanded unspecified general, severe and exemplary damages from the defendant as well as an injunction order to prevent Sanusi from repeating the allegation.

According to him, the defendant uttered the defamatory statement to lower the plaintiff's reputation in the eyes of the public or expose him to hatred, insult and ridicule and was triggered by malicious intent.
